What's the Difference Between Plantation Blinds and Traditional Blinds?

Plantation blinds are a great way to get the elegance of plantation shutters while keeping to a budget.

But what makes them differ from regular blinds, like horizontal blinds or mini blinds? Or plantation shutters?

Mini Blinds in a bathroom

Plantation Blinds vs. Mini Blinds

When you think of blinds, you might imagine mini blinds. This popular, budget-friendly window treatment often has one-inch aluminum slats.

Mini blinds are ideal for busy spaces with lots of foot traffic, since they’re easy to care for. And cordless blinds styles from Hunter Douglas are even easier to lower.

Plantation shutters

Plantation Blinds vs. Plantation Shutters

Plantation blinds are similar to plantation shutters but have a handful of distinct features.

1. Slat Thickness

Plantation blinds have bigger slats than regular blinds, often as big as 2.5 inches. But their slats are skinnier than plantation shutter louvers, which are as big as 4.5 inches.

2. Installation Location

Plantation blinds are installed at the top of windows, while plantation shutters are inserted inside the window opening.

3. Operating System

Many plantation blinds are raised with a cord, but some include a cordless lift system, like our custom blinds from Hunter Douglas.

Customize Your Blinds

Our blinds can be ordered in a selection of slat sizes, finishes and materials. Highly desirable materials include faux wood and wood blinds.

Not sure which kind you should select? Real wood blinds are ideal for rooms with little humidity, like bedrooms or living spaces. Polymer blinds are moisture resistant, making them a great selection for kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Whichever style you want, you’ll receive window treatments with superior light control.
